Media over all and its affect on Americans..

My Sociology professor from last year did a lecture on how Americans in this generation are becoming dependent on the media. He goes by Dr. Ron Matson and got his book, "The Spirit of Sociology" published in 2007. The book has many articles on sociology.

So basically, what he said was that since American children are so dependent on the media, they're intelligence level are going down hill. Many children in America want to be famous or do something in the Hollywood/Media industry. Because of this, there won't be very many American doctors, lawyers, or engineers. This is where immigration comes in and the Arabic and South East Asians come in and receive the education and job opportunity in America.

I feel like he could be right because I went to a Catholic school for 12 years. All of my friends didn't use the computer as much as I did because my dad purchased a computer for me at age 7. I learned how to use the internet on my own and got sucked into media. many students at my school have family computers and if they wanted to use the internet at my school, they couldn't because sites like facebook and myspace would be blocked. I'm the only person at my school who decided to go into design. Everyone else wanted to be doctors and lawyers. I feel like if I didn't know how to use the internet, I wouldn't be here today because I wouldn't be looking at other people's artwork, I wouldn't be admiring designs, and I wouldn't have known about Otis.

Is Dr. Matson right? I don't know, but I really do feel like the Media influences us to be who we are today. I mean, look at shows like America's Next Top Model or Project Runway. How about America's Next Top Designer?
